Java Relief is a special kind of coffee retailer. We sell high quality coffee that's fresh roasted, on demand. What makes us unique is that we are a volunteer company and 100% of our profits go directly to children at risk. Our hearts have been broken seeing the overwhelming need and sadness of so many of these children. Whether they are orphans, slave or sex-trafficked victims, or simply living in an unsafe and impoverished environment. We feel it is our God-given task to fight for these children — to provide meals, clothing, education and better homes.

Welcome to the Java Relief stories site where we talk about our passion of helping children at risk worldwide. Wake Up Do Good!

Where is the hope in Haiti?

Steve Siewert

As for our beloved Haiti, we haven't been back for over a year. There's just been too much risk in traveling with the gangs controlling about 60% of Port Au Prince and surrounding areas. Luken has been on lockdown - seems like the whole year - but he's still been able to regularly feed 150 children in The Luken Foundation program in Cité Soleil. Your generosity has played a big role in this, so THANK YOU! Thankfully all of the children have continued to be safe even in the violence.

You also played a part in throwing a Christmas celebration in Cité Soleil! With the help of Java Relief, Luken was able to throw a party and 500 people came to play games, dance, hear about Jesus birth and have a meal! This is a huge blessing to these people who really have nothing when most of us have more to eat - and more gifts under the tree - than we need. Luken has such a huge heart to serve this community.

Speaking of Luken, he is a man who is educated and devoted to helping others. We would consider him a middle-class Haitian and even he has gone without food many times during the past year. Luken's parents live on the other side of the island (Luken would tell you it's a 6 hour drive - but we've done it and it's 12 hours!), they work on a farm and often bring Luken food but with the gangs controlling the roads they can't travel. So Luken reaches out to us, "embarrassed and feeling disrespected" because he needs to ask for food for himself and his siblings. I try to wrap my brain around this messed-up world where we have full cupboards and freezers, nice homes and maybe even more than one home...  We are so blessed in many ways that actually cause us to not be so blessed... Make sure to take time to pause and be grateful.

With so many needs Steve and I go on these wise words...
The first time we met Luken he said, "One person can do something." And another quote Andy Stanley gets credit for, "Do for the one that which you wish you could do for the many".

Thank you for continuing to support us with our mission to help children at risk. You are making a difference with your coffee purchases and donations and we really appreciate you!
